Antiepileptic Drugs
Anticonvulsants also commonly known as antiepileptic drugs or as antiseizure drugs are a diverse group of pharmacological agents used in the treatment of epilepticseizures. Anticonvulsants are also increasingly being used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, since many seem to act as mood stabilizers, and for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Anticonvulsants suppress the excessive rapid firing of neurons during seizures. Anticonvulsants also prevent the spread of the seizure within the brain. Reduced IQ in children while taking anticonvulsants have been observed by investigators. However, the risk benefit analysis could include the distinct possibility of death and devastating neurological sequelae secondary to seizure.

Levetiracetam is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. Levetiracetam is used to treat partial onset seizures in adults and children who are at least 1 month old. The Spritam brand of this medicine is not for use in children younger than 4 years old or children who weigh less than 44 pounds. Levetiracetam is also used to treat tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children who are at least 6 years old, and myoclonic seizures in adults and children who are at least 12 years old.
